Piles in pregnancy: common, treatable, and nothing to hide.

Up to a third of pregnant women get piles or a fissure, usually in the last months or after delivery. Pressure from the baby, hormones and constipation all play a part. Most of it settles with gentle care, and a woman doctor is available at Sushrut Hospital.

Quick answerPiles in pregnancy are common because of pressure from the growing uterus, hormonal changes and constipation. Most cases are managed with fibre, water, warm sitz baths and doctor-approved local care; procedures are usually postponed until after delivery. Pregnant women should consult the doctor before using any kit.

Safe care at home

What usually helps

Fibre and water

Fruit, vegetables, whole grains and 2.5–3 litres of water a day, unless your doctor limits fluids.

Don't strain

A footstool under your feet on the toilet, and no phone in the bathroom.

Warm sitz bath

10 minutes, 2–3 times a day, in plain warm water.

Ask before medicines

Creams and laxatives should be approved by your doctor in pregnancy.

Watch for

Call the doctor if

Bleeding is heavy, a lump becomes hard and very painful (a clot), you have fever, or pain doesn't settle in a few days. Pregnant patients must consult the doctor before using any SIT EASY™ kit.

Don't wait if you notice

See a doctor soon for heavy bleeding, dark or black stool, fever with pain and swelling, weight loss, or a change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, especially after age 40. These need an examination, not a kit. Pregnant patients and anyone with a fistula should always consult the doctor first.

Questions people ask

Piles in pregnancy: common questions

Are piles harmful to the baby?

No, piles don't harm the baby. They can be uncomfortable for the mother and should be checked if bleeding is heavy.

Can piles be operated during pregnancy?

Surgery is usually avoided during pregnancy unless there is a complication; most piles improve after delivery.

Will piles go away after delivery?

Many shrink within weeks after delivery as pressure and constipation ease. If they persist beyond 2–3 months, get examined.

Can I take the ANOcheck™ while pregnant?

Yes, it is a guide. Tell the doctor you are pregnant; they will advise what is safe.
