Piles, fissure or fistula? Here's how to tell.

Three different problems, one embarrassing place. They feel different, they're caused differently, and they're treated differently. This page puts them side by side.

Quick answerPiles usually bleed without much pain and may form a soft lump. A fissure is a small tear that causes sharp cutting pain during and after stool. A fistula is a tunnel near the anus that leaks pus and follows an abscess. Piles and fissure often heal with care; a fistula needs a procedure.

Can you have more than one?

Yes, and it's common

Many people have piles and a fissure together, because both come from hard stool and straining. A fistula can sit alongside piles too. That's why a short examination, or at least the free ANOcheck™, is better than guessing from a photo online.

Don't wait if you notice

See a doctor soon for heavy bleeding, dark or black stool, fever with pain and swelling, weight loss, or a change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks, especially after age 40. These need an examination, not a kit. Pregnant patients and anyone with a fistula should always consult the doctor first.

Questions people ask

Piles vs fissure vs fistula: common questions

How do I know if it is piles or fissure?

Pain is the biggest clue. Piles usually bleed with little pain; a fissure causes sharp cutting pain during stool and burning afterwards.

Can piles turn into a fistula?

No. A fistula comes from an infected anal gland and abscess, not from piles. You can, however, have both at the same time.

Which is most serious?

A fistula needs a procedure, and any heavy bleeding, black stool or weight loss needs prompt examination whatever the cause.

Can the same kit treat all three?

No. SIT EASY™ kits are for piles, fissure and post-op care. Fistula is treated after a doctor's review, not with a kit alone.
