Ksharasutra: the Ayurvedic thread that heals a fistula slowly and surely.

Ksharasutra is a thread coated with Ayurvedic herbal alkaline preparations. Placed through a fistula tract, it cleans, cuts and heals the tract gradually over weekly changes, while protecting the muscle that controls stool. Sushrut Hospital has practised it since 1999.

How it works

Ksharasutra, step by step

  1. Examination. The doctor maps the fistula tract; MRI fistulogram if it is complex.
  2. Thread placement. Under anaesthesia, the medicated thread is passed through the tract. Usually day-care.
  3. Weekly change. A short OPD visit each week to replace the thread as the tract heals.
  4. Healing. The tract closes from inside out. The number of sittings depends on its length.
